Descartes and Material Substance Term Papers

In his Mediations on First Philosophy, Descartes drew a distinct line showing the difference between body and mind. Cartesian dualism is central Descartes’ claim in his philosophy, according to which immaterial mind and material body are ontologically distinct, but they interact between each other. The main feature of the body or a material substance is its extensional character: they have size, shape, and motion. Moreover, Descartes’ distinguishes primary and secondary objects, that is mathematics objects and sense objects; they are of primary and secondary qualities correspondingly. Extension is the essence of material substance. According to Descartes there are 8 proofs of the distinction between body and mind. Basically they base on the fact that God can create body and mind separately one from another, thus making them different. However, the proofs were criticized for fact that if God can create some thing independently one from another does not necessarily mean that two things will be distinct one from another. In the end Descartes defines reality as consisting of three things: the God, mind and body.
