Hypoglycemia is a condition which can be characterized by an unusually low level of sugar (or glucose) in the blood. It is very important to understand and to know how to prevent hypoglycemia because glucose is vital for the proper functioning of the body’s organs and systems. The amount of sugar in the blood is controlled by two hormones, insulin and glucagons, which are produced by the pancreas, a gland situated in the upper abdomen. The pancreas consists of tissue that has alpha and beta cells. When the level of blood sugar rises, insulin is released by the beta cells to enable glucose to enter the body’s cells. By means of this action the level of glucose in the bloodstream is lowered, maintaining it within the normal range. When the level of glucose is too low, the alpha cells generate glucagon, notifying the liver that it’s stores of glycogen should be released and changed to glucose. Thus, the level of blood sugar is changed back to the normal range.
